It was on this day today in 2003 that Gaia Online was founded. Founded by Derek Liu (Lanzer), Long Vo and Josh Gainsbrugh as go-gaia, it originally began as a anime link-list and eventually developed a small community.
Following a statement by founder Derek Liu, the website eventually moved towards anime-themed social networking/gaming and eventually became a forum-based website.
Today, Gaia Online is visited by over 7 million unique visitors each month with over 26 million total registered users and over 1 million posts are made daily. Gaia is headquartered in San Jose, California and the current CEO is Mike Sego. 90 to 95 people are currently employed at Gaia.
Most recently, Gaia won the 2007 Webware 100 award in the Community category and in January 2011, the company won the Mashable Best User experience Award for 2010.
